It happened in November 2005. I can still clearly remember eating fried rice, mum's special dish, in the living hall. A squeaky whining sound alerted me and I quietly put down my spoon. There had been reports of robberies around the place I lived. I looked out the window to "investigate" whatever was at my gate. Personally, I wanted some action-packed robbery or whatever to happen...
What I saw startled me. A couple of week old puppies were squirming outside my gate. At that moment, a four foot bent figure disappeared around the corner. I unlocked the gate and just stared at the watery black eyes that were now curious though terrified. Hollering at my mum, I used disposable gloves and picked up both pups, cradling them against me. I noticed that one of them had a white hind sock.
Mum was a part time vet she confirmed that they were both GSD puppies. *German Shepherd Dog*. That meant that they would grow into huge adults, probably the reason their owner abandoned them outside my house, knowing that we were animal lovers. The female GSD (the one with a white sock) actually started bonding with me. She licked and stumbled over my hands, demanding attention with her high pitch whines. She won my heart and I wanted to keep her. Mum wasn't so keen though. We already had 3 bloodhounds, 4 mongrels, 2 pairs of sparrows, 14 hamsters and a family of 5 cats!
Unbeknowest to me, mum had put them up for adoption after their injections. Seven weeks later, both had been adopted into two different families. I woke up early as usual and popped my head into the "Dog Palace" room where the GSD pups were kept with the bloodhounds. It was empty except the bloodhounds eating their breakfast. On their cages, were the words: ADOPTED. My throat tightened and I hurried into my mum's room to find out everything. My face was burning while she explained to me. I flew into a tantrum, and didn't have an appetite to eat. I just stayed in my bedroom, tearing up paper and soft toys. Looking back, it was rather childish. The hole in my heart lasted for six long months. Even after that, things weren't so good either. I started going "insane" and I failed almost all my examinations.
August 2007 came. I had recovered a little though I still sadly missed the female pup, which was probably a dog/bitch by now. One Saturday morning, I picked up the daily newspaper and skimmed through the latest lost and found column. The newspaper advertised for help to find a lost GSD! My heart started to pump a little faster.

I beamed with excitement, I studied in SMK Jalan Arang! However, I kept this excitment to myself. Mum did not deserve to know it. I did tell mum that I was going to school for some curricular activities, a lie of course. I wasn't accustomed to lying but, oh well... Shoving a pack of Alpos into my badminton bag, I headed out before she disaproved of going out on Saturdays instead of helping her with some paperwork.
Nearing the school, I spotted what I had been hoping for. My prayers were answered. Out of the long grass, a pair of dark tensed eyes peered at me recognisibly. Somehow she still remembered who I was, from her childhood days with me. I still took careful measures, these type of dogs have been known to kill when they felt threatened and they were used to help the police force and the army. Aurora took the dog biscuits gratefully from my hand. She must've been really hungry. Half an hour later, Aurora followed me home trustingly. I regretted that move.
Mom was just finishing a hamster's checkup when she saw me walking home with a giant trodding beside me. Her eyes almost popped out. I beamed proudly, I was satisfied, being a young kid leading a big dog. What a show off. ^^ "Sam! Are you okay?" She asked me as if I had gone out of my mind. She hadn't seen the advert in the newspaper so I doubt that she knew anything about Aurora. What she did notice was the white hind leg. And, I ignored her. She became stern though she didn't make any sudden moves to scare Aura into attacking. I guess she was a little scared too, staring at her child angrily while a faithful-to-your-child huge GSD was standing in her garden, on guard. She commaded me to stay away from the dog and I replied through my gritted teeth, "Order me again and I'll set her on you." Of course, I did not mean it but I was angry. I hardly ever talked to my mum ever since she gave Aura away. She hurt me so much by doing that and was she shock at my cold responds. I saw the sad look on her face and forced myself to smile smugly though in my heart, I looked like this:
I wanted her to love me so much, she did, I know, but I think I was quite selfish too at that time and I didn't feel it. I hated her because she did not give me what I wanted, that is, let me keep Aurora. I accused her of everything and she could not stand it. She took off into the bathroom. Her sobs could be faintly heard from the outside. After a while, she came out and we had a little nice conversation with some coffee that I made. I apologised to her and I, in turn, started to cry too! It was so awkward because I felt like I was talking to a stranger that was becoming less and less "strangerer" to me. Our relationship became better and well..it still is.
Anyway, once Aurora was with my family, which consisted of just animals and a mum, I became happier! The colour returned to my cheeks, the cold eyes faded and, I exceled in my exams. We had fun together, me, Aura, and mum for a few days until mum suddenly pried open my clothes cupboard to find a newspaper cutting of a lost dog. She called me and it hit me like, BAMm! I had totally forgotten about the owner that was franticly looking for Aurora. His was Mr Chai Jun Hing, a 87 year old retired businessman.
I finally knew I couldn't avoid it. Around Aura's neck was her collar. Imprinted on it, was the details of Mr Chai. I shakily picked up the portable phone and dialed. A female voice answered the phone and I asked for Mr Chai. "Are you a friend of his? Haven't you heard, Mr Chai had a heart attack yesterday. He has been sent to Timbaland Hospital." I quickly asked for Mr Chai's room number and sribbled it down. After getting me to wear a skirt to look pleasant, mum eventually sent me to the hospital. In Room 172, a man full of white hairs with a majestic photograph of Aurora was lying and looking at me. I confessed everything to him in one breath and apologised over and over again. Mr Chai gazed at me and shook my hand. He said,"I'm an old man now, I just need you to promise me one thing. -coughs and clears throat- Promise that you'll take good care -cough- of Aura. Promise me." And I did. On that special day, the hospital staff allowed me to bring Aura to the old man. Mr Chai petted her fondly and strained to kiss her. Aurora licked him one last lick. Mr Chai, full of confirmation that I'll take care of Aurora, passed into another world peacefully.

Months later, I found out the Aurora was pregnant. A vet staff informed me that he witness Aurora mating with a male mongrel named Booshie. I told mum. Mum said she was too busy already and I was about to go to secondary school, which, to her, meant I couldn't care for Aura. I admit that there has been a day or two that I have forgotten to change Aura's water but I loved her a lot. To my horror, mum phoned the SSPCA to come pick Aura up. I snatched the phone away but it was too late. "I'm NOT going to lose her again! Not AGAIN! I promised Mr Chai. I thought I could trust YOU!" I yelled at my mum with tears streaming down my face. She slapped me for being rude and Aura immediately bounded towards her with gleaming ferocious teeth snarling. Mum at once grabbed the syringe nearest to her and aimed it at Aura. It was a Euthanisia injection, a lethal drug that was used to put animals to sleep. "Aura, STOP! Please, no!" I tugged Aura away from mum. The syringe came down and barely missed her ear.
A few minutes later, the SSPCA truck arrived and I, which was just a 12 year old kid couldn't do much but shout and scream at them. They hauled Aurora up and mum's iron grip on my arms didn't waver. Suddenly, overcome with sadness and anger, I went into a shock...999 came.
Slurp, slop! Nudge nudge. "Urmghh" I groaned. A hot panting tongue slurpped my face as if I was the Slurpy Sundae. I thought I was dreaming when I saw what was licking me and passed out again. The smell of antiseptic woke me up. I was quite dizzy and my mum appeared. She held my hand, saying that she loved me and that Aura would stay with us forever. Aurora, of course, didn't have an objection to that. I nodded anad grinned despite the cold air conditioning. That was the mum I knew. And we lived happily ever after.
THE END
